A Glimpse Into The History Of Castlepark House

Company News

The Needle Room, the new play from Braw Clan, is fictional but set in Castlepark, a listed Swiss-Anglo-Japanese villa built in 1880 by architect William Leiper. He designed a handful of buildings in Clydesdale, such as Lindsaylands and Cornhill House and is best known for Templeton’s Carpet Factory in Glasgow.

Owner Peter Thierfeldt says

“Even though it’s right in the centre of Lanark, for years Castlepark was shrouded by overgrown holly trees and dense conifers, so that the outside world could only catch a glimpse of the “pagoda,” which is the unique sewing room right atop the house. Castlepark seems to lend itself to stories, especially mysterious ones.

Learning that Martin wanted to set The Needle Room here, in order to create a thrilling and important play that highlights Lanark’s rich history, is a really exciting moment in the long story of this property.”
