Drookit! Takes Flight At Dumfries Theatre Royal
Company News
Development work on Drookit!, the fourth project in Braw Clan’s Unlocking Scots programme, took place at Dumfries Theatre Royal in early April. Written by storyteller Susi Briggs with lyrics and music by Alan McClure, the play is a magical, musical adventure for children aged 3 and up.
When a few gentle raindrops turn into a blattering thunderstorm, three butterfly friends are separated. They need courage, kindness and a little advice from Cat, Bird and Puddock to find their way home. Director Fiona Mackinnon worked with actors Helen McAlpine, Anya Scott-Rodgers and Morven Blackadder to bring the story to the stage.
The sharing of Drookit! sold out, with over twenty children aged 3-10 in the audience. Many of them drew pictures to share their thoughts and feelings about the play. One grown-up said:
“Amazing music and songs. The message is an important one of accepting each other.”
Feedback for Drookit! also includes:
“Absolutely loved it! Pure magic. The actors were great and very engaging. Love the music and the songs. Would love to see it as a full production and the kids all seemed to enjoy it and stay engaged.”
“It was excellent. Very simple idea that engaged the audience. Story exactly at the right level in terms of the kids’ understanding.”
“Brilliant show, well thought out. easy to understand, funny, children were engaged throughout, would definitely recommend and would watch again.”
“I enjoyed every minute. Action, music, story, costumes. Would go and see this every week if I could.”
