The Severed Lug

BY MARTIN TRAVERS

It’s 1967 and desperation has brought struggling folk band The Puir Sowels to the icy cellar of an abandoned Wiston inn.

Touring with The Incredible String Band is the big break they've been longing for, but with their lead singer in jail for holding up a Woolworths with a bow and arrow, morale is at rock bottom. Their only hope is finding a new singer, fast. And with funds running low, they can't afford to be picky about where to hold the audition.

But as they play, something in the freezing shadows is listening.

Full of warmth, humour and heart-breaking, foot-stomping live music, join us for a sharing of our work in progress this July. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance - click below to reserve your seat or ring 01899 220600. The Severed Lug: Pickled Eggs And Damnation is part of Braw Clan's Unlocking Scots programme - find out about it here.

Friday 25th July - 7.30pm, Biggar Corn Exchange

THE SEVERED LUG

The Severed Lug was a rehearsed reading of our folk music comedy.

Our rehearsed reading of The Severed Lug by Martin Travers took place at Biggar Corn Exchange in July 2025. We wanted to make a new play that combines Scots story-telling and live music, with the feel of a folk gig.

Tickets sold out in 8 hours and 100 people came to see the reading. The Severed Lug was part of Unlocking Scots, Braw Clan's development programme funded by the National Lottery.

We tell spell-binding stories,
in your village hall.

You know how almost no plays in Scots are put on in Scottish theatres?

Well, what Braw Clan does is make new theatre in Scots, inspired by the people of Clydesdale, and we tour it to rural communities in the south of Scotland. We bring world-class performers and powerful local stories to your village hall so you can enjoy them with your family and neighbours.

In fact, someone who came to a Braw Clan performance said “After watching the play, I feel re-energised about my village and sharing our stories."
