Crawfordjohn, March 1924. Nancy Gibbs runs barefoot to Abington station with her family’s rent money in her pocket. Her life is as cold as the Clyde in winter but she knows she’s going to be a star.

Raised in a damp labourer’s cottage by her spiteful mother, Nancy’s getting married to a farmer in the morning. Her wedding will end their years of hunting rabbits and taking in washing to scrape by.

Suddenly, in the front row at Hamilton Picture House, Nancy dares to imagine a different future for herself and her beloved sister. She plots to get away. But her mother has secrets of her own and they’re gathering like wolves.

Chats about the characters

All of the characters in So Long, Wee Moon struggle against prejudice. Listen to Dr Pamela Jenkins, host of the popular My Family, Mental Illness... And Me podcast, chat to Clare from Braw Clan about how they help and hurt each other.

If you're affected by anything you hear in these conversations, there are people you can talk to for support. You can contact your GP, samaritans.org, refuge.org.uk or childline.org.uk. If you are a young person, you can also talk to a teacher or other trusted adult.

We tell spell-binding stories, in your village hall.

You know how almost no plays in Scots are put on in Scottish theatres?

Well, what Braw Clan does is make new theatre in Scots, inspired by the people of Clydesdale, and we tour it to rural communities in the south of Scotland. We bring world-class performers and powerful local stories to your village hall so you can enjoy them with your family and neighbours.

In fact, someone who came to a Braw Clan performance said “After watching the play, I feel re-energised about my village and sharing our stories."

Pay what you decide, after you've seen the show.

Braw Clan's theatre tickets are priced on a Pay What You Decide basis.

There's no up front cost - you book in advance as usual, but without making a payment. After you've seen the show, you decide what you think it's worth. This removes any risk of paying for something you might not enjoy. If you haven't enjoyed the show at all, you don't have to pay anything.

All the ticket payments we receive (you can pay by card or cash,) helps Braw Clan make more plays so we hope you'll give generously.

"I wanted to write a play about a woman
with a head full of dreams."

Martin Travers, Playwright

I wanted to write a play about a young woman with a head full of dreams. Someone who's desperate to become an actor during the silent movie era. I'm interested in what someone like that might be prepared to do to get what she wants, and the consequences of her actions.

Recently I've been reading the plays of coal miner playwright Joe Corrie. He's probably most known for his play In Time O Strife, set during the general strike in 1926. I love how he wrote about working class characters, for working class audiences. His work hasn't dated and is really funny and harrowing.

His plays were performed by the Bowhill Players who made "propertyless theatre for the propertyless class” in Fife. They took their productions out into their communities – that’s what Braw Clan does too. It felt right to have a connection with the Bowhill Players in So Long, Wee Moon.

Nancy is inspired by a real person but quickly became herself. She's strong and talented but damaged by her experiences in America. She's got a clear sense of justice and is protective of her younger sister, Wee Moon.

Annie, Nancy's mother, is funny and fragile but can be really cruel. She's a widow who's had a hard life and is constantly wracked by anxiety over what the people of Crawfordjohn think of her.

And near Lanark train station there's a bit of graffiti painted on a wall that just says "Wee Moon." I first saw it years ago and thought it was a brilliant name for a character. So Wee Moon is the name of Nancy's half-sister in the play. I think audiences will fall in love with her.

Each play is different, but these characters almost wrote themselves over a period of about two weeks. I'm excited for you to get to know them.
