A Delicate Arrangement
Production Diary

Thursday 29th June
We’ve had two days putting the play up on its feet. This is a big move forward, obviously for the production, but also for my professional development.
It doesn’t matter how well you prepare, or whether you know the play inside-out, there’s always that tiny voice in the back of your mind whispering none of that’s going to matter when it comes to opening your mouth and talking to actors.
Happily, so far, we are having a ball.
Being back in a rehearsal room after two years of admin to get to this point is like being administered oxygen. My vision for the piece is taking fledgling shape, though clearly nothing has been nailed down at this point. Everything is about exploring.
As an actor, I railed against prescriptive directors, so I want to balance creating a safe exploratory space for the actors, whilst honouring my interpretation of the play. If I succeed in maintaining this delicate arrangement, then I know I will be surprised and delighted by some of the finds we make.
I’m minded of a Geoff Dyer quote I head on a course with Paul Hunter from Told by an Idiot: “It’s not what you know that’s important. It’s what your passion gives you the potential to discover.”
